Classic cars of specific brands here in Indonesia have been
deeply associated with communities and clubs for a long time now. “You drive a
BMW? Oh, you must be part of the BMW Club” “Oh, you own a VW? You must be part
of the Volkswagen Club”. The attachment of cars to their respective clubs is
inevitable to say the least. But what if you didn’t want to bear the burden of
car club commitment: the hassle of routine gatherings, annual events, uniforms
(LOL), registration & monthly fees, and so on and so forth. What if you
just wanted to get together with other people of the same interest and passion
for their cars, and just plain old have a good time every now and then?
VWeekenders is the “movement” – as they call it – you ought
to look forward to on one weekend or the other. Started off by a couple of
dudes who drove old air-cooled Volkswagens, loved photography and couldn’t be
bothered with the cumbersome shennanigans of the local car culture as a means
to gather the like-minded with no strings attached.
One of the gatherings they host is a laid back cars and
coffee styled Volkswagen meet-up on weekend mornings they like to call
“Breakfast Club” where the use of the word club is clearly irrelevant in this
case. They announce the public invitations/posters on their Instagram a few
days beforehand, stating where and when the Breakfast Club is to be held,
usually starting at 8 in the morning in the suburbs of South Jakarta.
On June the 30th 2018, the most recent Breakfast
Club was held at a ruko area next to
the Pondok Indah Hospital. As expected, many VW enthusiasts from all over the
Jabodetabek area decided to show up. The VWeekenders guys usually provide free
coffee and snacks for everyone to enjoy, and boy was the ambience of the ruko parking lot, the smell of hot
coffee combined with the typical scent of old Volkswagens – you know, the one
of old gasoline, worn leather, with a hint of rust– to die for.
Beetles, Buses, and a Golf started pouring in one by 9 o’clock,
and eventually the parking lot was filled with various old Volkswagens. Early
models, late models, original looks, and custom looks all blended together,
without any discrimination and shade from one another. Everyone talked, and
joked the whole morning while sipping coffee, and walked around checking out
each other’s rides.
All in all, it was definitely a Saturday morning well spent,
and we look forward to another VWeekenders Breakfast club, and so should you.
